Danni Washington – Diva of the Deep

TV Host and personality Danni Washington is deeply passionate about our oceans and science communications.
She dreamed of studying the oceans since she was six years old and now in addition to her career as a scientist and onscreen personality she keeps busy with Big Blue & You – A non-profit organization she founded with her Mother that is dedicated to inspiring and educating youth about marine conservation through the arts and media. Their motto is “Ocean Conservation through Artistic Inspiration” and both the organization and Danni herself serve as a great example of how fun and fascinating science can be.

We caught up with Danni at the Ocean Heros Boot Camp where we created social media campaigns on banning single use straws and connected with other young environmental activists.

Science Sisters put Monica Mugnier Under the Microscope

Our girls traded in their microscopes for microphones for a day and did a great interview with scientist Monica Mugnier! Along with studying environmental and biological science at the BioBase, (the Girls Club’s state-of-the-art science lab) our young scientists took a trip to our Sound Studio for an exclusive interview with scientist Monica Mugnier.

In the lab she studies the African trypanosome, a parasite that causes African Sleeping Sickness, and the ways it hides from our immune system. Her work has been published in Science magazine, and she has been invited to speak at multiple national and international conferences. Her work has also taken her across the globe, with collaborations taking root in Portugal and Africa. When she isn’t pipetting, she likes to share her science with kids around the city.  She is as passionate about education and hanging out with her dog (but usually not at the same time).

Thanks Monica, we hope to have you back soon at Girls Club!
